How long does the endoscopy procedure take?

Answer: An endoscopy usually takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the type of procedure being performed. The sedation medication keeps the patient unconscious during the procedure, after which, within an hour the patient gains consciousness during recovery.

Can I resume normal activities after the procedure?

Answer: Typically, you can resume most daily activities within 24 hours after an endoscopy, once the sedation effects have worn off. However, on the day of the procedure it is advised not to drive or operate machinery and wait for the sedation's drowsy effects to dissipate. Guidelines are personalized which is why it is important to ask your doctor about the do's and don't of endoscopy.

How accurate is endoscopy in detecting cancer?

Answer: Endoscopy is instrumental in cancer diagnosis and can be a very accurate way to detect cancer. Endoscopy is widely used to diagnose Gastric cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Lung cancer through Bronchoscopy and Cystoscopy in the diagnosis of Bladder cancer.

Can I eat normally after a colonoscopy?

Answer: Yes, there are no dietary restrictions after a colonoscopy unless directed by your doctor. However, for a few hours after the procedure, you should eat light foods and avoid greasy, fried, or spicy foods; even carbonated beverages, like soda, alcohol, and sparkling water should be avoided.

Can I work the next day after a colonoscopy?

Answer: In most cases it is safe to work the day after a colonoscopy, however if the patient is dizzy, experiencing nausea or fever or experiencing effects of the sedation, it is advisable to take the day off from work to completely recover. It is always recommended to consult your doctor for specific instructions based on your health.
