What to Expect during Weight Loss Surgery?

Pre-Surgical Preparation

Patients undergo thorough medical evaluation, nutritional counseling, and psychological assessment to ascertain whether they qualify for bariatric surgery or not. The patient is also required to stop smoking, lose additional weight, and adjust their existing medications.

Anesthesia & Positioning

Bariatric Surgery is performed under General anesthesia which is administered to the patient on the operating table. The anesthesia is administered by a Senior Anesthesiologist in the right amount of customized dosage monitored by the team during the surgery.

Laparoscopic/Robotic Port Placement

Small incisions are made, and laparoscopic/robotic ports are inserted in the abdomen to allow surgical instruments for dissection, grasping, retracting, and cutting. A specialized surgical camera is also used to visualize the abdominal cavity along with Fluorescence imaging to guide the surgeon during the surgery.

Stomach Resizing or Rerouting

The surgeon resizes the stomach or reroutes the small intestine according to the type of bariatric surgery being performed whether gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. The type of procedure depends on the patient's needs and the patient is thoroughly counselled several days before the surgery.

Stapling & Closure

The surgeon uses a stapling device to create a new, smaller stomach pouch through Linear stapling or circular stapling. Once the stapling is complete, the surgeon closes the incisions through sutures or staples during which the patient experiences no pain as they are under the effect of anaesthesia.

Post-Surgical Recovery

Post surgery, the patient is kept under observation in the recovery room. If the patient had previous medical history, a team of superspecialists will provide additional consults for holistic health monitoring. The patient will experience some pain, nausea, and fatigue in the first few hours and the hospital stay will typically range between 24 to 72 hours.
