How Does a Cochlear Implant Surgery Work?

Initial Consultation and Assessment

A thorough evolution is conducted by an Audiologist and ENT specialist. Hearing tests, imaging scans, and medical assessments help determine if a cochlear implant Mohali is the right treatment based on the patient's hearing loss treatment and overall health.

Pre-Surgery Preparations

Once the patient and their family has made a cohesive decision to move ahead for surgery, a pre-operative testing is conducted to ensure that the patient is fit for cochlear implant surgery, This may include blood tests, Audiological Tests and imaging studies.

Surgical Procedure

The ENT surgeon makes a small cut behind the ear and uses specialized state of the art microscopes available only at Sohana Hospital to access the inner ear where the highest quality imported implants are carefully inserted in the ear to stimulate the auditory nerve.

Closing the Incision

After the implant is placed, the surgeon closes the site of incision with sutures. Throughout this procedure, the patient is under general anaesthesia making the process practically painless. The whole procedure for hearing loss treatment takes about two to three hours, depending on the anaesthesia given and additional health factors.

Recovery and Healing Period

Post-surgery, the patient is kept under observation in the hospital for some time to monitor general health along with auditory responses. Once the ENT surgeon gives clearance for discharge, the healing process takes a few days, during which the patient may experience mild discomfort or swelling that subsides over time.

Activation and Auditory Rehabilitation

In the subsequent visits to the hospital, the external processor implanted on the patient’s ear is activated. The patient undergoes auditory rehabilitation to understand how to interpret sound. Complete sound rehabilitation is provided along with speech therapy for about 4-6 weeks.

Helping Children with Hearing Loss

Physical Exam

Our ENT Surgeons conduct a thorough painless physical examination of the ear using a device called the otoscope to ascertain Pediatric Hearing Loss which has occurred due to earwax build up, infection or trauma and injury.

Screening Tests

Screening Tests are performed to see how well different pitches and sounds are received inside the cochlea. These Audiological Tests include Tympanometry, Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) & Acoustic Reflex Measures.

Audiometric Tests

An audiometry test measures the ability of the ear to hear sounds at different frequencies, tones, pitches and volumes. Three non-invasive tests include Pure Tone Testing, Speech Audiometry and Tuning Fork Tests.

Objective Tests

Objective ear tests measure the electrical activity of the ear and hearing nerve through a test called the Electrocochleography (ECOG). This test is non-invasive, quick and painless. It is an imperative test to check the cochlea.
