What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is the uncontrolled multiple division of normal cells in the breast tissue into abnormal ones. It usually starts in ducts or lobules, which produce milk. The malignant cells may increase in number and invade the tissues surrounding them, forming a tumor, or break loose and travel through the lymph vessels to other parts and cause the spread of cancer.
Common symptoms of breast cancer include lumps within the breast or underarm areas, uneven size and shape, skin dimpling, redness or swelling, nipple discharge, and persistent pain. In some cases there may be no visible symptoms; therefore, regular screenings are required for early detection.
Breast cancer can be identified by a clinical breast examination together with imaging procedures that include mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies. Other tests can be done to determine the stage of cancer and its characteristics, through tests like an MRI or genetic testing.
Risk factors for breast cancer include being a woman, increasing age, family history of breast cancer, inherited genetic mutations, early-age onset of menstruation, late menopause, dense breast tissue, lifestyle factors like alcohol intake, smoking, and obesity.
Breast cancer develops from stages 0 to 4. Stage 0 is ductal carcinoma in situ, it is a noninvasive breast cancer where abnormal cells are contained only in the ducts of the breast which doesnโ€™t spread beyond the breast tissue. Cancers at Stage I are limited and most of the time relatively small. Stages 2 and 3 are larger or more spread-out tumors. Stage 4 describes metastasis, meaning that cancer has developed beyond the breast into other parts of the body.
