FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cancer Treatment FAQ
Blood cancer, leukemia or lymphoma is curable in many patients, especially if it’s diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapies, and stem cell transplantation are some of the treatments administered. Cure rates depend upon the type of cancer, its staging at presentation, and many other factors that vary from person to person.
A blood test is sometimes able to detect the presence of cancer because abnormal cells circulating in the bloodstream are associated with some types of cancer. However, a blood test alone is not a final diagnostic test. Sometimes, these tests are used together with other tests like imaging and biopsies for purposes of confirmation and treatment monitoring.
A complete blood count can also reveal cancer. An abnormally high white blood cell count or a low red blood count or the platelet count can point toward cancer. That may indicate some abnormal condition of the blood, such as blood cancer, like leukemia or lymphoma. It will need further testing to finally diagnose the exact form of cancer.
Blood tests can reveal the presence of cancer. This would typically involve searching for abnormal levels of some substances or cells in the blood. For example, high tumor markers or abnormal white blood cell counts can be an indication of cancer. However, these tests alone are not certain, and additional testing is often conducted to confirm a diagnosis.
Blood cancer can have a genetic link with blood cancer, which sometimes runs in families. Genetic alterations, when acquired, or some inherited conditions can increase the risk for that person to acquire blood cancer, like leukemia or lymphoma. But it doesn't mean that everybody having a family history will suffer from this disease; on the other hand, many cases do occur without any known genetic factors.
