How to increase chances of normal delivery?

February 16, 2024

Parenthood is one of the most important and the most cherished moments of life. However, normal delivery is something that every parent wishes to have rather than a caesarean delivery. Normal delivery typically means the baby moves out of the mother’s body through the birth canal without the need for any instruments. No doubt why vaginal birth is considered one of the best ways of giving birth to a child. Further, this type of delivery has fewer complications in comparison to any other type of delivery. Also, the recovery is quick and easy after a normal delivery that eliminates problems for future pregnancies.

Stages of normal delivery

Normal delivery happens in three stages that are described here below.

Cervix dilation

When a pregnant lady begins to feel contractions on one side of her uterus, this stage begins. The contractions become long and more frequent while also widening the cervix. The three sub-stages of cervix dilation are:

  • Early labour: With contractions every 5 minutes, the cervix widens up to 4 cm.
  • Active labour: With strong contractions every 3 to 4 mins that last for 60 seconds, the cervix widens up to 7 cm in this sub-stage. The pregnant lady should be taken to the hospital during active labour.
  • Transition: With painful contractions every 2 minutes that may last up to 90 seconds, the cervix opens about 10 cm.

Birth of baby

The mother pushes the baby out of the birth canal and the baby's birth takes place. If needed, the doctor may give an incision on the vagina to let the baby come out of the vagina.

Expelling placenta

The doctor will expel the placenta from the uterus after the baby is born. The placenta may take up to half an hour to come out after the baby's birth. This may be followed by some bleeding which is normal after a delivery.

Increasing the chances of the normal delivery

While more than 20% of women go for C-sections, normal delivery is still a preferable option due to fewer complications. To increase the chances of having a normal delivery, one may consider the following points.

  • Having a healthy and well-balanced diet that gives energy for natural labour.
  • Exercise regularly to resist the pain during labour
  • Hire a trained labour support who will help you reach normal delivery
  • Perineal massage relaxes the muscles
