Oncology Treatments
Treatments:
The abnormal growth of cells in a brain causes tumors or brain cancer. Malignant in nature, the tumor can grow aggressively to the other parts of the body. Brain cancer can be diagnosed by MRI, CT scan, physical examination, Stereotactic brain biopsy or Biopsy through surgery. The treatment of brain cancer involves a complex process with the widely used treatments involving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Many brain tumor patients undergo surgery that involves the removal of tumor with the assistance of image guidance, leaving the healthy brain intact. Neuroendoscopy is another surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes the tumor through small holes in the nose, mouth, or skull. This process allows the neurosurgeons to access areas of the brain where one cannot reach doing traditional surgery. Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy are other ways used to treat brain cancers.

Out of a million children in India, around 150 get diagnosed with cancer. Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Bone tumors are the most common paediatric malignancies among children. Diagnosis at the initial stage can be very stressful for both child and parents. The emotions are natural but the lack of information and misconceptions makes the situation worse. The situation can be very painful for the parents to see their child in such condition but the good news is that all childhood cancers are treatable. In fact, most of them are curable as well. The most common body parts affected by cancer include blood, bones, brain, and muscles. The familiar forms of cancer include blood cancers (leukemia), lymphatic system cancer, (lymphomas), brain and spinal cord cancer, muscle and bone cancers and other cancers(embryonal cancers) seen in the very young children. More than 80% of children with cancer get cured but it also depends upon the type of cancer they suffer from. Like for some cancers the cure rate is 90%, while for others, it is almost 95% (provided the disease is detected at an initial stage and treated properly).

Symptoms of Paediatric Cancer

Cancer among children becomes often challenging to recognize as the symptoms are common to childhood illness or diseases. However, if the following symptoms persist, the child might require immediate attention:
  • Limping
  • Persistent fever
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Lack of energy and paleness

Symptoms of Uro-Oncology

  • The common symptoms of kidney, bladder, and prostate cancer include bleeding in the urine, pain or burning sensation while peeing, and feeling the need to urinate more often (especially during the night).
  • Kidney cancer may also lead to fever, pain in the side, fatigue, and weight loss.
  • Prostate cancer will affect the flow of the urine and patients may experience difficulty while starting or stopping the urination. It may also lead to difficulty in achieving an erection.
  • Testicular cancer often results in the swelling or enlargement of testicles. It may also lead to pain in the groin/scrotum/back/lower abdomen.

As the name suggests, this type of cancer affects the functioning and production of the blood cells. The cancer occurs in bone marrow- the essential source of blood production. Bone marrow mature and develop into 3 types of blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets. In case of cancer, the process of blood production gets interrupted due to the growth of an abnormal type of blood cell. The various types include Myeloma, Leukemia, and Lymphoma.
Types of Blood Cancer
  • Leukemia - When the production of abnormal blood cells increases rapidly, it results in leukemia. The rapidly increasing abnormal blood cells affect the ability of bone marrow to produce white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.
  • Lymphoma - Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system- responsible for the production of immune cells and the removal of excess fluids from the human body. Lymphocytes are the one of a kind of white blood cell that keeps infection at bay. The abnormal lymphocytes turn into lymphoma cells and start to grow uncontrollably in your lymph nodes and other tissues.
  • Myeloma - Myeloma is the kind of a blood cancer that affects the plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells that help produce disease-fighting antibodies in a human body. Myeloma adversely affects plasma cell production leading to a weak immune system.
Symptoms Of Hematology Oncology
Some of the common symptoms of blood cancer are:
  • Anorexia
  • Weight loss
  • Bleeding in gums
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Frequent vomiting
  • Confusion and delirium
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Hot lashes while sleeping
  • Easy or excessive bruising
  • Recurring fever of infection
  • Abdominal/bone/back pain

The Musculoskeletal Oncology is the branch of medicine that specializes in treating soft tissue and bone tumors of the pelvis, shoulders, and limbs, benign and malignant tumors, primary bone malignancy, sarcoma, metastatic disease of bone, and pathologic fractures due to malignancy in children and adults. The treatment of bone cancer usually involves a multidisciplinary approach involving several specialists such as medical oncology, orthopaedic oncology, radiology, radiation oncology, and pathology. The treatment process depends on the location, size, and grade of the cancer. Bone Cancer: It occurs due to the abnormal growth of tissue that forms when cells divide uncontrollably. It may weaken the bones and cause a break/fracture. Soft Tissue Sarcomas: It is a whole family of cancers that arise in the connective tissues of the body which include muscle, fat, blood vessels, bones, nerves, deep skin tissues, and cartilage.
Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Sarcoma:
A great number of bone tumors are metastatic from other organs of the body including colon, breast, or lung. Sarcomas occur in bone and may arise anywhere in the body. Bone sarcomas usually occur around the shoulder, knees, or pelvis, or, in the long bones of the body. It is important to diagnose sarcomas at the initial stage of the disease formation. Risk factors for musculoskeletal sarcoma are:
  • Any past treatment done with radiation therapy
  • A change in the retinoblastoma gene
  • Having certain conditions, including Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Paget disease, and, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome
It is believed that multidisciplinary involvement is required for the management of these rare diseases. We at Sohana hospital boast of a team of experienced doctors specialized in the care of patients with soft tissue and bone tumors. This team consists of oncologists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic, medical, nuclear medicine specialists, surgical, radiations pathologists, radiologists, onco-psychologists, and molecular oncologists. Treatment of each musculoskeletal cancer patient needs to be individualized, planned and personalized. At Sohana hospital, all such cases are handled with care and a proper treatment regimen is followed to not only maximize the chances of patient’s survival but also to ensure good functional outcomes.
Lung cancer occurs due to abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in the lungs. Such abnormal growth of cells does not allow the lungs to function normally and restrict the development of healthy lung tissues. As the cells start to grow in both the lungs, they divide and start developing in the form of tumors. A major risk with lung cancer is that, if not diagnosed and treated early, it may spread to the other parts of the body. The tumors that occur at one place in the lungs and do not become noticeable to spread are called “benign tumors”. Tumor that spreads to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system is known as “malignant tumors”. Usually, the abnormal cells do not grow in lungs with healthy tissues. Some of the most common factors leading to the occurrence of lung cancer are exposure to radon, certain chemicals in the workplace, air pollution, active passive smoking, and family history of lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths (due to cancer) among both male and female. It claims more lives each year as compared to ovarian, prostate, and breast cancers combined.
Symptoms of Lung Cancer
Common symptoms of lung cancer may include:
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Pain in bones
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Appetite loss
  • Constant coughing
  • Coughing phlegm/blood in a very small amount
  • Chest pain that gets worse when taking deep breath, coughing, oir laughing
There is a possibility that the patient might be suffering from recurrent respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia. When cancer spreads, the additional symptoms depend on the body part where new cancer is formed. Tumors that are formed on the top of the lungs may affect facial nerves, leading to small pupil, drooping of an eyelid, or lack of perspiration on one side of the face. These symptoms are called Horner syndrome and may cause shoulder pain.
Gastro-Intestinal Oncology deals with malignancies related to the Stomach, Liver, Gut/Intestine, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Colon, Oesophagus, Rectum, Anus, Bile Duct etc The cancer can form an ulcer or mass within the stomach and it may also spread diffusely throughout the walls of the stomach. Also known as gastric cancer, stomach cancer is usually found in people between 50 and 70 years of age. It is more common in men. Options for treating gastrointestinal cancers include Radiotherapy, Surgery, and Chemotherapy.
Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Oncology
Symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer usually varies, depending on the type of cancer. The common symptoms may include:
  • Fatigue
  • Bloated stomach
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Abdominal discomfort and pain
Causes of Gastrointestinal Oncology
The causes of gastrointestinal oncology can be:
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Age factor
  • High salt intake
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Consuming foods with high animal fat
