Bone Cancer: Causes, Treatments & Survival Rate

February 20, 2024

There are varying kinds of cancers that develop in the bones, of which one is bone cancer. The type of bone cancer is determined by the tissue or cells where the cancer begins. Primary bone cancers begin within the bone and may harm the normal bone tissue. On the contrary, secondary or metastatic bone cancers begin from the other body organs and spread within the bones. The most common cancers that spread to other body parts or organs are breast cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.

Symptoms of Bone Cancer

Many people experience little to no symptoms when they are already suffering from cancer. However, some people start to feel a painless lump in the initial stages of their cancer. In many cases, the symptoms go undetected because of some other medical condition that delays the diagnosis. Some of the common symptoms of bone cancer may be, but are not limited to:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained swelling
  • Fever
  • Difficulty in moving
  • Pain, that worsens especially during the night

Causes of bone cancer

Although experts have failed to find a certain cause for cancer, they could link the presence of cancer with some other factors. One of the most common factors is the exposure to radiation. Another factor responsible for causing bone cancer is pharmacological (drug) treatment for treating any other type of cancer. In rare cases, bone cancers tend to develop due to hereditary factors in which it gets passed down to following generations in the family.

Treatment for Bone cancer

The basic treatment plan for bone cancer depends on the location of cancer, type of cancer, and if it is spreading. Your healthcare team may work together to plan and treat your bone cancer. This team may include radiologists, oncologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and nurses.

Bone cancer treatment includes:

  1. Surgery: Removing the tumour surgically along with some healthy tissue surrounding it.
  2. Radiation therapy:  High dose of x-rays help to shrink the size of the tumour.
  3. Chemotherapy: Medicines help to kill the cancer cells present in your body.

Survival Rate with cancer

The survival rate of cancer patients depends mostly on the type of cancer you have and whether spread or not. Whether it is the adults or the children, the five-year survival rate with cancer is approximately around 70%. The five-year survival rate of osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma is between 75%-80%.
